Last day at Holy Cross School, seriously

Goodbye to the kids

School closed on Thursday and the teachers went on an island tour on Friday. It was a nice close to the school year. We were going to have a fun day in the pasture on Thursday, but the rain washed out those plans. So the students hung out in school.

Island tour

On Dominica I had a great homestay family and saw a lot more of that larger beautiful island in the all to short time I was there. I’ve been here for almost 18 months but I was dropped into the thick of it with school. I’m also more a site rat than a tourist.  So I was really looking forward to the drive around the island.

We had a nice bus

Caribs was the name given by Columbus to the Kalinago people

I’m so glad I got to see more of this beautiful island and spend a last day with the teachers. It’s not bad being a tourist sometimes...

My original plan a few months ago was to extend my service on Grenada. I love the people of the Eastern Caribbean and staying another year in Munich at Holy Cross would have been great, would have been easy.

It was a very difficult decision with a lot of factors, but I’ve decided that it is best for me that I complete my service normally and return to the states to spend time with my family in August. So this island tour was also a going away celebration from the teachers to me.

I'll miss teachers and staff

I'll miss the islands when I leave

Peace Corps

I’m currently considering my options for my next step. I’ve applied for another two years in Peace Corps – go anyway and do anything. Things are moving on that front – but of course nothing is decided yet.

I’ve been blessed with an easy life compared to the majority of people on the planet. At this point in my life I don’t have a good answer to the question why with my health still strong for a 60+ person I should not live and work among people who have a much harder struggle to succeed, to live.

Many people are working to make the world a better place. Anywhere people are, there are things one can do to improve the world and to help others. I think this is one of the true sources of happiness.  You don’t have to join Peace Corps, you don’t have to leave your home. The important thing is to ….

Love always,
John
